SSM Diversity Enhancement Fund

SSM DiversityPurpose

Established to enhance diversity among the faculty, staff, and students in the School of Sciences and Mathematics. These funds are used at the discretion of the Dean to support diversity recruitment, retention, and education initiatives related to race, ethnicity, gender, culture, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, beliefs, or other ideologies depending on the need of the department.

The fund is used to support a variety of initiatives related to enhancing diversity in science, math, engineering, and computing programs at the College of Charleston, including but not limited to:

  • Supporting faculty, student, and staff diversity recruitment and retention events, travel, and offers
  • Providing scholarships that attract academically prepared students from diverse backgrounds
  • Funding research assistantships that populate faculty research labs with a diversity of students
  • Supporting SC Alliance for Minority Participation (SCAMP) activities and similar STEM programs at The College
  • Providing scholarly travel support for students, faculty and staff to attend and/or present at diversity-related conferences in the STEM fields
  • Assisting with international study abroad opportunities that enable College of Charleston students to experience diverse cultures
  • Promoting exchange-related programs which bring a diversity of international students and faculty to the School of Sciences and Mathematics
  • Providing preparation and guidance towards graduate and professional school to assist the College in diversifying the nation’s STEM workforce
