Susan Hilsman, M.D.
Susan Hilsman, M.D., (Susie Olson, College of Charleston, BA German, '83) is a practicing physician in Spartanburg, South Carolina since 1990. She has served Spartanburg Medical Center's Level One Trauma Center as an Emergency physician (1990-2016) and Wound Center physician (2002- present). The Wound Center is a busy multidisciplinary practice (>1400 patients per month) with four hyperbaric chambers. A primary mission of the center is limb salvage and treatment of all types of wounds in all ages of patients.
Dr. Hilsman has enjoyed teaching residents and students throughout her career and has participated in hospital leadership extensively, serving as the first female Chief of Staff of Spartanburg Medical Center. She is currently President of CMET (Council of Medical Education testing) the only national physician-specific certification in wound healing.
She and her husband Ralph are proud parents of two adult sons, both of whom work in health care. The Hilsman family enjoys spending as much time as possible in Charleston. Dr. Hilsman maintains a deep, abiding affection for the College.
These are exciting times. She will strive to uphold the traditions of the College, with its unique blend of liberal arts, student-professor relationships and opportunities for experiential learning while developing new programs with STEM. Dr. Hilsman believes that it is indeed possible to think global and act local, preserve tradition and try new things. The possibilities for the College of Charleston going forward are endless!
